X-CulT: Microsoft Windows

First released in 1985 as an attempt by Microsoft to cash in on the growing DOS GUI market, Windows quickly exploded into the most used operating system on PCs. The myriad of Windows development choices led to many different forms of games being made. 2D games would usually just use the Windows API or some other API, and can be found everywhere freeware games are sold. 3D games tended more to Microsoft's DirectX technology, and many commercially successful games have been released for it. Most recently, Microsoft released the XNA API, which allows games to be written for both Windows and the XBOX 360.
