The Famicom Disk System was an 8-bit console addon developed by Nintendo and released in 1986 in Japan. Nintendo wanted to expand the space they had for games, and thus the disk system addon was created. The FDS was reasonably successful, although it did not see a release outside of Japan, although it was planned. The Famicom disk system allowed for not only more game space, but better saving features than were allowed on the cartridge media at the time. On the technical side, the Famicom Disk System added 32kb of ram to the system pool and allowed for the use of extra sprites in games due to an extra 8kb for sprite storage.
