The Nintendo 64DD was a 64-bit console addon developed by Nintendo and released in 1999 in Japan. In some ways, the Nintendo 64 was an amazing success. A long line of games, amazing 3D graphics, and crisp sound were definitely some of the main reasons. However, the Nintendo 64, being cartridge based, could only hold so much game data. That's when the 64DD was devised. There are many N64 titles that were originally proposed for the 64DD including Super Mario RPG 2 (renamed to Paper Mario in the N64 release), and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. On the technical side, it had a 32-bit coprocessor for use with the disk drive. It also added 4MB of ram to the system pool. The 64DD disk format was a 64MB magnetic disk similar to the ZIP format disks. The 64DD also contained it's own boot bios, similar to that of later consoles.
