How to control enemy characters

Golden Axe III's programming allows any character in the game -
player or enemy - to be controlled. In normal gameplay there is no
method to play any character other than the four heroes (although Eve
(the birdman boss) is playable in Versus Mode). However, by editing the RAM
value which controls the player's character it is possible to load in
the enemies for use in game.
If you want to edit savestates, you will need to alter the
values at ED4D (for Player 1's character) and/or EEAD (for Player 2's
character) to one of the values shown in the list below.
Alternatively, you can use PAR codes to achieve the same result
and force the game to not to alter the value, which is very useful. PAR
codes that work in Gens are FFC8D4:00XX (for Player 1) and/or
FFCB94:00XX (for Player 2), where XX is one of the values in the list
below.

00=Proud Cragger
01=Eve
02=Kain Grinder
03=Chronos "Evil" Lait
04=Sarah Barn
05=Spearman
06=Clubman
07=Ego Iru Shiipu
08=Mustang
09=Vanity
0A=Corvette
0B=Dead Frame #1
0C=Damud Hellbringer #1
0D=Damud Hellbringer #2
0E=Dead Frame #2

Notes:- Editing the character value mid-stage will not load new graphics - the best time to do is before a stage starts. The names used for the characters are my own due to the lack of any official names. Obviously none of these enemy characters - with the exception of the Birdman - were intended for player control, and as a result are extremely buggy. Problems range from incorrect palettes to missing
graphics to complete crashes when the player attempts certain moves. In general, the enemies are controlled in the exact same way as the player characters. Button combinations which activate moves with the normal characters will often activate moves with the enemies. However, if a particular enemy does not have an attack - such as a back attack - and you attempt to perform that move, the game will most
likely either crash or mess up the graphics. All the enemy characters,
with the exception of the Birdman, move up and down extremely quickly,
which looks very odd. Below is a quick look at each enemy character, and in
particular the magic attacks the game assigns them in 1 Player Mode.
These are interesting as the game assigns some enemies co-op magic
attacks - see Hidden Unused Magical Attacks.
01 - Eve

The most complete of all the enemy characters due to his
presence as a character in Versus Mode, Eve has a full set of
moves, his own character icon and very few glitches. However, it is
clear that he was never intended for use in the normal game; his
graphics will not load, leaving his sprite severly corrupted. The only
way to play him with the correct graphics is to encounter Eve
boss (so that his graphics are loaded) or to copy his graphics into a
savestate from a Versus Mode savestate. His graphics will be messed up
every time you begin a new stage, which is extremely annoying.

Magic:

Kain's 1 Potion magic, but instead of a sound effect the game plays one of the background musics!

Kain's 3 Potion magic, again with a music track rather than a sound effect.

Kain's 6 Potion magic, again with a music track rather than a sound effect.

05 - Spearman

The Spearman's graphics will always load and are designed to use
the player's palette, which avoids a few problems. Interestingly, one
of his magic attacks is the one used by the Prince of Darkness in the
final boss fight.

Magic:

Damud Hellbringer's lightning attack from the final boss fight. This is the only way that it can ever be used by a player.

Same as above with no sound.

Nothing.

06 - Clubman

As with the Spearman, the Clubman's graphics will always load
and use the player palette. However, his attacks never make contact,
which makes him pointless to use.

Magic:

Game crash.

Game crash.

Proud's magic rock attack.

07 - Ego Iru Shiipu

Ego Iru Shiipu's graphics, as with other larger enemies, will not
load unless you copy them across from a savestate. He has an amazing
secret magical attack at his disposal.

Magic:

Game crash.

Game crash.

Proud's co-op magical attack - see Hidden Unused Magical Attacks. The map music plays in place of a sound effect, and your character will be frozen afterward until attacked.

08 - Mustang

As with the Ego Iru Shiipu, his graphics will not load by themselves.

Magic:

Game crash.

Game crash.

Proud's 3 Potion magic attack, followed by a game crash.

09 - Vanity

These ladies are similar to the Spearmen and Clubmen.

Magic:

Game crash.

Game crash.

The palette will change briefly, then you will be frozen until attacked.

0A - Corvette

Again, similar to Spearmen and Clubmen, their graphics will load and is quite playable with exception of certain attacks.

Magic:

Chronos' 1 Potion mist attack with no sounds, followed by some spectacular mesing up of all onscreen graphics.

Game crash.

Kain Grinder's 3 Potion waterspouts attack, followed by some more graphical messing up.

0B- Dead Frame #1

As usual with the normal sized enemies, the Dead Frame's graphics
laod themselves, and certain moves will crash the game. There appears
to be no difference between this character and Dead Frame #2 (value 0E).
His 3 Potions magic attack is interesting as provides a shortcut to the
ending.

Magic:

Game crash.

Following a palette glitch, the game shortcuts to the ending, or rather
the point following the first time you defeat the Damud Hellbringer.
If your rating is good enough, you will activate the second final boss
fight as usual, if not you will see the unsuccessful ending sequence.

Game crash.

0C - Damud Hellbringer #1

The final boss is very fun to play, mainly due the fact that his
attacks are just as powerful as the CPU version's. However, his
graphics will not load without copying across to a savestate. As with
the Dead Frame, there appear to be two different versions of the final
boss, possibly due to the fact that his second incarnation as the final
boss has extra moves.

Magic:

Strange sound, then a crash.

A palette flashes for a second, then the character is frozen until hit.

Strange sound, then a crash.

0D - Damud Hellbringer #2

Identical to the first Damud as far as I've been able to tell.

Magic:

Game crash.

Game crash.

Proud's 1 Potion magical attack.

0E - Dead Frame #2

Identical to the first Dead Frame, and I can't think why the game
would need two seperate character values for this enemy. However, this
guy does have Sarah's giant fireball as one of his magical attacks.

Magic:

Game crash.

Sarah's giant fireball co-op magic - see Hidden Unused Magical Attacks. Afterwards you are frozen until hit.

Game crash.
