Star Mode
what the "STAR" cheat, found in the Japanese version of the game does.
The code was deactivated along with a load of other cheats in the
western releases of Ristar, however were kept active in the Japanese
versions. In version 0701, if you input the "STAR" cheat, you're given a message
telling you "Star Star Mode" is active. Yet there is no change to the
game what so ever. It could be because the code was already being made
obsolete, perhaps replaced by the creation of another code or the
removal of a feature in the game made it obsolete.
In version 0718, if you input the "STAR" cheat, you're given an
identical message as to what you get in the final (J) release of the
game. "What is your wish?" along with a green, shooting star travelling
across the screen. The cheat going from a mode switch to a left-over in
17 days must have meant that the cheat was already deactivated.
So why was the cheat left in the game? There is no real answer.
However, it does seem at one point that this did do something, just not
any more. One possible reason it was left in the game was because the
developers got sentimentally attached to the code and instead of
outright removing the code, they replaced it with a "farewell" message,
to make it still have some use.
