Square bullies fan hackers

Chrono Trigger fans beware. Square is watching your interwebs. Chrono Compendium received a cease and desist letter from Square/Enix, demanding all hacks relating to their decade+ old games be stopped. You can read Sqare's vomit here. It's really sad that Square has taken this road, because it shows exactly what Square thinks of it's fan base. Keep in mind, if we take 100 Chrono Trigger fans, and ask them about game console emulation, how many would know what it is? Then you take that fraction, and find those who know about rom hacking, how to patch a game, etc. Then you take that fraction of a fraction and find how many would be willing to sit through a fan made reconstruction of a game. What you have is a tiny, tiny grouping of DIEHARD fans. And Square takes a big ol' shit on them. Fuck you Square. I guess you need something to do while you're not continuously destroying your franchises.

Yeah that Crimson Echoes hack was at like 98%, that was a dick move from SEBut 98%? If I was amoung thoses hackers, id take a step back, rename it and all ref's to the old game withing the game, and just leak the bastard onto the internet from an alternate nodescript location. Its not like SQ knows anything about it besides "its been done". That makes it reasoanbly untraceable.

Square still has diehard fans?Fuck Square. Really. I actually bought Chrono Trigger DS because I got a discount on it, and I still regret it. It's the same damn game with two extra areas that I got through in a few hours tops. This is something that could've easily been put on Virtual Console, or even Wiiware if they had such an urge to add the extra bosses that are literally just recolors of bosses that were already in the game.

Only good part of Square-Enix is the Enix part.

This is pretty bad. I said it on IRC already, but I think it needs to be said again. It's always damning to hear about such a big company like Square-Enix discouraging fan development. Fuck them, seriously.

Square's never really been in tune with their fans, let alone fan communities in general. The only time they reach out to fan communities is to tell them to shut up, take shit down or rename something. Being in a Square-related community in the past, I know first hand the faggotry these arses pull. Kh2.co.uk had leaked still frames/video from the opening of Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and a bunch more leaked screenshots of the English localisation of the game. They were told to take all of it down. It was a fucking 2 minute long video of the game's pre-rendered opening movie. Which they did comply to remove the video, but the stills and screenshots were still there. I doubt Square would have done shit even if they didn't comply with the C&D.And as I said in #cult yesterday, Square's done this before. Some Square-related fantranslation of a game unreleased in the west or a fangame remake of a game was shut down (maybe both were, can't quite recall) when they were pretty far in. It's a nice way of alienating the people who keep your business afloat, isn't it?

Apparently a leak of the hack was available on Megaupload for a short amount of time; perhaps we should try and find it so we can spread it to a wider audience?

Tweaker has the right idea. This is a nonprofit fan-work, stuff like this shouldn't be destroyed, but preserved. Time to search....

If anyone can get it I'll relay it.

Square really needs to find better things to do with its time. This is getting ridiculous.

An early pre-beta of Crimson Echoes has been put up on uGamer, btw. Expect it to hit the wider web very soon - though according to the original devs, this one is quite an early beta, not near the final release at all.

Supposedly the new rom floating now is from february, but that info is either questionable or even unconfirmable. I've played it, it's got a lot of graphics bugs but I got a few hours into it without many issues. I did get a time-killing freeze so I haven't gotten back to retrying that part just yet. But yeah, when you go to look for glenn near fiona's...might want to make some extra saves just in case.

Fuck this. I get so sick of companes that treat fans like this. OK, every single company is in it for the money, but is it so hard to even TRY to look like you care about the fans? Marketing tactic in itself.
